How to recycle the seemingly unrecyclable!

People seem to be making a real effort this year to have a less wasteful Christmas, whether that be buying less, sourcing eco-friendly gifts or using plastic-free reusable/recyclable wrapping. This is great to see and I’m so glad it’s becoming easier to shop this way!

The South Oxfordshire website has all the information you need about standard recycling over Christmas. But…what about those ‘unrecyclables’ that package some of those traditional Christmas (and year round) favourites? Enter TerraCycle.

Who?

Some of you will have heard of TerraCycle, particularly if you have children at John Hampden School or you’ve been on your low waste journey for a while. But for those of you who haven’t, here’s the lowdown (direct from Terracycle):

TerraCycle is an innovative recycling company that has become a global leader in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste.

TerraCycle offers free recycling programmes funded by brands, manufacturers, and retailers around the world to help you collect and recycle your hard-to-recycle waste. For example, crisp packets, cheese wrappers, beauty packaging, .

A variety of organisations (such as schools and churches), as well as individuals, act as drop-off points for you to take your hard-to-recycle waste to. Once they have enough, they then send the waste to be recycled by TerraCycle and in turn earn rewards for the school or their chosen non-profit organisation.

There are various drop-off locations local to Thame (see the TerraCycle website for the full list of locations for each recycling programme) but you may need to travel round a little to drop-off all your items at the different locations. But if that sounds like it would (understandably) put you off doing it, then why not make use of Renewed Eco Shop’s TerraCycle collection service? If you place an order with us, we’ll happily collect your TerraCycling when we deliver your order! Alternatively, drop it down to us in Long Crendon at our stable store on Woodway Farm Industrial Estate. We then take the collected items to the different drop-off locations, meaning you don’t have to.
