Thame walking routes

Increasing the number of walking routes in and around Thame.

Overview

By developing and publicising new walking routes, this project aims to encourage everyone living in and visiting Thame to walk more, and leave their cars at home – with the associated benefits of better health and well-being, reduced congestion and cleaner air.

Two new walking routes in and around Thame have been developed: the shorter routes is the 4-mile Thame Inner Circuit and the longer route covers a 20-mile Thame Outer Circuit, connecting villages around Thame with shorter segments linking back into the town. Both use existing rights of way with detailed instructions. Both routes are available online (links below) and the Outer Circuit is also available in printed form.

Objectives

  • To encourage more people to walk, walk more and enjoy the experience
  • To improve fitness and mobility
  • To enable people to enjoy the great outdoors
  • To help us all to use our cars less, reducing road congestion and improving air quality

Impact

  • Development of the Thame Outer Circuit – which represents a considerable challenge if done in one go, or shorter segments can be walked either via loops or using local bus services
  • Development of the Thame Inner Circuit – which provides a good overview of key areas of Thame outside the town centre

Next steps

  • There is an aspiration to plan a new mid-Thame circuit, but this will mean agreeing new footpath routes and creating new links to form a route of approximately 10 miles around and just outside the town’s current built up areas.
